Suspect Fires Shots At Police, No Officers Injured (Photo)

A suspect who fired shots at Portland Police, not causing injury to officers, is deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024 at 3:42 p.m., two Portland Police Officers assigned to the Traffic Division initiated a traffic stop on a driver near Southeast 92nd Avenue and Southeast Taylor Street. The driver, an adult male, eluded the stop. The officers did not pursue, but checked the area.

As officers drove up to Southeast 88th Avenue between Southeast Taylor Street and Southeast Main Street, they saw the suspect vehicle parked and the suspect outside of it. They challenged the suspect. The suspect turned and ran as he fired shots at the officers. The officers did not fire shots. They radioed for additional police resources to respond as they coordinated a perimeter to contain the suspect.

The suspect fired shots at an additional victim who was driving past him as he attempted to flee. That adult female driver was not hurt. The suspect ran into Berrydale Park at 9004 Southeast Taylor Street. There, as officers surrounded the park, the suspect shot himself. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance and later died.

No officers or community members were injured.

Due to the use of deadly force against police officers, Detectives with the Homicide Unit and Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene and are investigating.

Detectives believe there may be additional video evidence captured by residential surveillance systems in the area. Residents living between Southeast 86th Avenue and Southeast 92nd Avenue between Southeast Taylor Street and Southeast Main Street are asked to check their video recordings between 3:40 p.m. and 3:47 p.m. to see if any footage of evidentiary value was captured.

“This incident illustrates that there is no such thing as a routine stop or routine call,” said Chief Bob Day. “While I grieve the loss of life, I’m relieved to know that the officers are not physically hurt, nor were the community members in the area of the suspect when he chose fire shots in a neighborhood.”
