###ORIGINAL MESSAGE BELOW###

A man who barricaded himself inside an occupied apartment prompted a callout of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT).

On Monday, April 25, 2022 at 9:09p.m., Central Precinct officers responded to 1000 block of Northwest Naito Parkway on a report of a suspect entering an occupied apartment on the second floor. Preliminary information suggests that he accessed the unit by climbing from the roof of the building onto a balcony. The residents of the apartment evacuated themselves. The suspect armed himself with knives and a hammer. He began causing significant damage to the interior of the apartment, including breaking windows, furniture, and appliances (photo). He threw objects, including furniture, out of the apartment onto the ground below. Officers set up containment around the area an evacuated at least 3 apartments. SERT and CNT responded.

CNT negotiators communicated with him over the next several hours. He agreed to surrender and was taken into custody at 12:58a.m. He was transported to a hospital by ambulance. The suspect suffered some self-inflicted injuries but no one else was hurt.

The suspect’s name will be released after he is charged with a crime.
