The victims in the double fatal crash in the Concordia Neighborhood have been identified as James E Johnson, 64, and Lisa T Johnson, 60. Family members have been notified of the deaths.

Anyone who has information about the crash, and has not spoken to investigators, is urged to contact the Traffic Investigation Unit at (503) 823-2103.

The driver in this crash is facing manslaughter and other charges.

Jaylon Benjamin, 29, was interviewed by Major Crash Team investigators and then booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on two counts of Manslaughter, Animal Abuse and Reckless Driving.

The identity of the victims will be released at a later time. This investigation is continuing.

Clarification on the statistics: These are the 55th and 56th traffic related fatalities this year in Portland. There have now been 7 traffic deaths in the last 2 weeks. Portland fatal crashes counted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for this year is 55. NHTSA’s count excludes crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, and deaths that happen more than 30 days after a crash.

A crash in the Concordia Neighborhood has killed two people, and a driver is being detained for a criminal investigation.

On Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 5:59p.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of a crash on Northeast Lombard Street and Northeast 33rd Avenue. When officers and EMS arrived, they found two adults, a driver and passenger, deceased in a small SUV. A pickup truck was also involved in the crash. The driver of that vehicle was detained by officers for a criminal investigation.

The Portland Police Traffic Division Major Crash Team responded to the scene to investigate. During the investigation, Northeast Lombard Street is closed between Northeast 33rd Avenue and Northeast 36th Avenue. The Oregon Department of Transportation responded to assist with traffic control.
