A suspect who was menacing people with a gun has been taken into custody.

On Friday, January 5, 2024 at 10:05p.m., East Precinct officers responded to a report of a man pointing a gun at people in a restaurant parking lot in the 10500 block of Southeast Stark Street. Officers immediately began searching for the suspect and spotted him nearby. The man moved to a breezeway of an apartment building near Southeast 105th Avenue and Southeast Pine Street. The man was not cooperative and refused to surrender. The Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were activated.

In the meantime, officers evacuated some of the immediately adjacent apartments for safety. Once SERT and CNT were in position, they negotiated with him for multiple hours. When negotiations were unsuccessful, aerosol irritant was deployed. That was successful and he was taken into custody on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 3:21a.m.

The road closures will be cleared shortly after officers remove vehicles and equipment, and evacuated residents are being allowed to return home. The suspect’s name and charges will be released at a later time.
