On Friday, March 2, 2018, at 10:39 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to the report of a robbery at the Plaid Pantry, located at 4214 Southeast Woodstock Boulevard.

Officers arrived at the store and learned a suspect entered the location and demanded money while brandishing a knife. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, the suspect reportedly left the location in a white four door vehicle.

Responding officers searched the neighborhood and with the assistance of a community member located a white four door Kia being driven in the area of Southeast Bell Avenue and Southeast Johnson Creek Boulevard. In the 8900 block of Southeast Stanley Place officers attempted to perform a traffic stop on the driver of the Kia. As officers attempted to stop the driver and Kia, the driver crashed the vehicle into a canine officer's patrol vehicle.

After the collision, the driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers, including a canine team, searched the neighborhood and the driver was located in the 5700 block of Southeast Westfork Street. The driver was taken into custody and based on evidence learned at the Plaid Pantry, officers believe the driver to be the suspected robber.

The officers and canine in the patrol vehicle were uninjured as a result of the suspect crashing into the canine team's patrol vehicle. After the suspect was taken into custody he was assessed by medical personnel and released for transport to jail.

Officers located evidence of the robbery in the white Kia as well as in the possession of the suspect at the time of his arrest.

The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Phillip G. Mawhiney. Mawhiney was lodged in the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Robbery in the First Degree and Robber in the Second Degree.

Investigators with the Portland Police Bureau Detective Division's Robbery Detail will continue this investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Robbery Detail detectives at 503-823-0405.
