On November 29, 2016, 50-year-old Charles Anthony Longjaw was indicted by a Multnomah County Grand Jury on a charge of Murder. He will be arraigned on Thursday December 1, 2016.

This investigation started on Sunday November 20, 2016, at 6:02 p.m., when Central Precinct officers responded to the report of a stabbing at Southwest 3rd Avenue and Oak Street.

Officers and medical personnel arrived in the area and located the victim, 43-year-old Mark Sandoval Whelan, suffering from stab wounds. Whelan was transported by ambulance to a Portland hospital for treatment to serious injuries requiring multiple surgeries. On November 26, Whelan succumbed to those injuries.

Officers canvassing the area found a blood trail leading to the intersection of Southwest 4th Avenue and Pine Street. Limited information that night indicated that two males ran from the area, one described as a Hispanic or Native American male in his 30s.

Assault Detail detectives were able to identify Longjaw as the suspect and he was subsequently arrested on November 21, booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Assault in the First Degree and Assault in the Second Degree. Longjaw was additionally held on a parole violation.
