Extra resources from North Precinct, the Traffic Division, the Air Support Unit and our local law enforcement partners patrolled North and Northeast Portland. Last night's directed patrol for April 19, 2020 resulted in 12 traffic stops, 24 traffic citations, 3 towed vehicles and 4 arrests.
Individuals arrested:
- Juvenile-Male, 17, 1 count of reckless driving
- Kevin Garcia, 18, 1 count of reckless driving and 1 count of reckless endangering
- Jaren Jacobsen, 24, 1 count of reckless driving, 1 count of reckless endangering and criminally driving with a suspended license
- Mystar Russell, 19, 1 count of reckless driving and 1 count of reckless endangering
These irresponsible driving practices can have a deadly outcome. There have been 12 Major Crash Team activations and 13 vehicular related fatalities this year.
The Portland Police Bureau will continue its efforts in educating community members about the dangers of speed racing. This education will be conducted on our social media platforms and through one-on-one conversations with participants. But enforcement action will also continue against individuals who are suspected of committing crimes. The investigatory arm of this enforcement effort will be following up with the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office after identifying suspects from previous incidents.
Our Traffic Division is also committed to providing enforcement and raising awareness regarding traffic safety for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians. Each year, traffic officers respond to preventable collisions. These collisions can deeply impact those involved, their families and loved ones. Traffic officers ' number one priority is to address behaviors of all road users that might lead to a collision, including speed, impairment, distraction, and disobeying signals.
The Portland Police Bureau works closely with our partners in government and the community to create safer streets and work toward reducing, and eventually eliminating, traffic fatalities as part of Vision Zero.
