UPDATE: Deceased Driver Identified

The occupant killed in a New Year's Day crash in Southeast Portland is being identified as
Daniel Martinez, 19, of Portland. His family has been notified of his death. The two passengers are not being identified. One is seriously injured.

Investigators determined Martinez was the driver of the vehicle, which was seen driving at a high rate of speed before it crashed into a pole. They do not believe any other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

This was the first fatal crash of the year.

A vehicle occupant died on the scene of a crash Friday morning, and another is in the hospital with life threatening injuries.

On Friday, January 1, 2021 at 7:16a.m., East Precinct officers were dispatched to a crash at Southeast Division Street and Southeast 112th Avenue. When officers arrived with Portland Fire and Rescue and AMR paramedics, they located a single vehicle that impacted a pole. One occupant was found deceased. Another occupant was seriously injured and transported to the hospital by ambulance. That person's injuries are considered life threatening. A third occupant had minor injuries and was treated on scene.

The Portland Police Traffic Division Major Crash Team is responding to assume the investigation. While they do their work, Southeast Division Street is closed between Southeast 109th Avenue and Southeast 113th Avenue. Southeast 112th Avenue is closed between Southeast Lincoln Street and Southeast Clinton Street.

The PIO is not responding to the scene. More information will be released as investigators gather more information.

This is Portland's first fatal crash of 2021. It comes less than 12 hours since the last fatal crash of 2020, which was the 58th traffic-related death of that year.
