CORRECTION Update #5- Bridge Crash Driver Identified

CORRECTION: The driver's name is Antonio Amaro-Lopez. We regret the error.

The Portland Police Major Crash Team investigators are confirming that the identity of the driver recovered from the Columbia River is Antonio Amaro-Lopez, 57, of Portland. His family has been notified. The vehicle he was in was confirmed by license plate to be a 2006 Subaru Tribeca registered to Amaro-Lopez's family. Plans are underway to recover the vehicle from the water.

The Portland Police Bureau is grateful to all who assisted with the response to this incident, especially the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office for their extensive search efforts.

On Wednesday, February 17, 2021, PPB Traffic Investigators were notified that the Multnomah County Dive Team located a vehicle in the Columbia River. A body was recovered from the vehicle. The Medical Examiner will confirm the identity of the deceased person and investigators will notify family. No information about the vehicle is being released at this time. More information will be released when appropriate to the investigation.

On February 14, 2021 Portland Police began an investigation regarding a single vehicle crash on the Glenn Jackson Bridge, I-205 southbound, in which the vehicle went off the bridge, over the Columbia River. No vehicle, nor person associated with it has been located. Portland Police Major Crash Team investigators believe weather related road conditions were a factor in the crash.

On Monday, February 15 and Tuesday, February 16, 2021, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office River Patrol Unit conducted sonar scans on the Columbia River under the Glenn Jackson Bridge. Marine Deputies conducted this work over many hours. The River Patrol Unit will continue scans in an attempt to locate the vehicle.

The Portland Police Major Crash Team is not aware of the vehicle in this crash having been discovered. According to the investigators, the vehicle has not been located and they have no vehicle or passenger details to release.

On February 14, 2021 at about 5:48 p.m., Portland Police received the report that a vehicle may have gone over the guardrail of the Glenn Jackson Bridge, while travelling southbound on I-205.

The Portland Police Major Crash Team took the crash investigation. Based on physical evidence and witness statements, it appears a vehicle travelling south on the freeway lost control and went over the guardrail between the Oregon -- Washington border and Government Island. The Columbia River is below that portion of the bridge.

The Portland Police is collaborating with other law enforcement and government agencies on this investigation. The Portland Police does not have a river patrol or search and rescue capabilities and any such response will be managed by another agency.
