On May 17, 2021 at about 9:47 p.m., Portland Police responded to shots fired calls on Swan Island. Officers responded and found shell casings and noticed what appeared to be a number of people leaving the island in cars.
At about 9:57 p.m., Portland Police responded to Emanuel Hospital regarding a gunshot victim who arrived by private vehicle. A crowd gathered and in the minutes that followed three additional people with apparent gunshot wounds came into to the emergency department. All four shooting victims appeared to have non-life threatening injuries and came from the incident on Swan Island.
The large crowd and emotional response to the shooting interfered with the orderly operation of the emergency department and ambulance bay and created a need for an increased response to restore peace at the hospital. Individuals were combative with staff and created a disruptive and potentially dangerous scene. Several members of this crowd were reported to be armed.
At about 10:09 p.m. officers from throughout the city responded to provide a presence and diffuse arguments and fights that sprang up on the hospital property and to deter any more violence. Within minutes the situation began calming and within an hour police were sent back to their work throughout the city. By 12:23 a.m. police were clear from the hospital.
The shootings are under investigation. Investigators found over 50 cartridge casings of different calibers at the crime scene on Swan Island. Investigators determined that at least two occupied semi-tractor trailer vehicles were struck by bullets, as were buildings on the island.
