On June 23, 2021, at about 3:35 a.m., Portland Police officers from East Precinct responded to a shots fired call in the Centennial neighborhood, in the 2600 block Southeast 160th Avenue. A caller reported hearing gunshots outside a residence and then a male with a gun entered the residence claiming someone was following him and had shot at him. He ran off before police got there.

The person with the gun was described as a black male wearing pants, but no shirt or shoes and had left in an unknown direction. Officers found shell casings near the location of this call they believed might be associated with this incident.

At about 3:44 a.m., a caller in the 15700 block of Southeast Clinton Street heard someone at their door and could see a black male holding what looked like a handgun.

As officers investigated, they looked around the area for the suspect. At about 3:55 a.m., a call came in regarding a black male in an upstairs bedroom of a different house in the 15700 block of Southeast Clinton. The man had apparently accessed the roof of the house with a ladder, then fell through the roof to the interior of the house. The man was described as a black male and was a stranger to the residents.

Two people inside the house got out, but the stranger armed himself with a machete and prevented a third person from leaving.

Police responded and spend about an hour on the phone with man, who appeared to be in crisis. An officer with the Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team (ECIT) talked with the man until he came out and was safely taken into custody. The third person inside the residence came out at about the same time.

Police searched the area and recovered a handgun they believe the Davis had dropped.

The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Darryl C. Davis, was connected to all three incidents. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance to be evaluated, then booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Kidnapping I, two counts of Burglary I, three counts of Menacing, Assault IV, Strangulation, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Discharging a Firearm in the City, Recklessly Endangering Another Person.
