Several violent incidents in a barely two hour time period caused a significant drain on resources in East Precinct Thursday evening.
At 5:37p.m., officers responded to a call from a victim driving her car who said she was being followed by someone in another car. The 911 calltakers from the Bureau of Emergency Communication (BOEC) tried to guide her to East Precinct to meet officers but she was unable to get there. She stated someone from the other car was shooting at her. Both the victim and the suspect crashed into parked cars during the confrontation. The victim eventually crashed into a utility pole at Southeast 86th Avenue and Southeast Ellis Street. She was not seriously hurt. The suspect left and no arrests have been made. (21-223457)
At 7:14p.m., Officers were dispatched to the area of Southeast 74th Avenue and Southeast Reedway Street on a report of shots heard. Officers located evidence of gunfire, and found bullet strikes to an occupied home. One resident used yellow spray paint to mark where she found bullet casings in the street. Officers did not find anyone involved in the shooting or anyone hurt. They recovered evidence to further the investigation. (21-223510)
At 7:26p.m, an East Precinct Sergeant was flagged down at Southeast Woodstock Boulevard and Southeast 80th Avenue by someone who said that he had just stabbed his brother, and said the brother had committed an assault. Officers responded to assist and found the man in the street nearby on Southeast 77th Avenue bleeding. He was uncooperative and tried to walk away. Officers learned that the man strangled his mother and girlfriend. When officers began giving him commands to stop, he complied, was taken into custody, and transported by ambulance to a hospital with a stab wound to the buttocks. His injuries are not life threatening. The two victims who had been strangled also had non-life threatening injuries and were treated on scene. The suspect is still being treated at the hospital and is expected to be booked into jail after he's released. The Portland Police Special Victims Unit was consulted in this case. (21-223526)
At 7:56, officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting at a camp in the 9300 block of Southeast Holgate Boulevard. They found a victim in a tent with injuries to his legs. The officers placed a tourniquet to help control the bleeding. The victim was conscious but at the time unable to tell officers much about the suspect. The victim was transported to a hospital with injuries that are not life threatening. The Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team (ECST) responded to the scene and is investigating. No suspect information is being released at this time. (21-223556)
These incidents required significant numbers of officers, sergeants, detectives, and criminalists to investigate, and caused a long delay in response to other calls, including some high priority calls. East Precinct used its Twitter page (
https://twitter.com/ppbeast) to notify the community that it would take longer to respond to calls during that time.
