UPDATE #3 CLARIFICATION: Suspect Who Shot Officer Identified

CLARIFICATION: This update clarifies that cause of death was a single gunshot wound.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner has completed an autopsy on the deceased suspect. He is identified as Alexander Tadros, 30. His family has been notified of his death. The ME also determined that Tadros died from a single gunshot wound fired by an officer.

The injured officer continues his recovery. He has requested privacy and is not being identified at this time.

The officers who fired their weapons in this incident are Officer Joshua Howery, a 20 year veteran of PPB, and Officer Jake Ramsey, a 4 year veteran. The involved officers will be interviewed within 48 hours of the incident. The officers are on paid administrative leave until the completion of the investigation.

The suspect will be identified after the autopsy and the Oregon State Medical Examiner confirms his identity, as well as the cause and manner of death.

The officer shot in today’s incident has been treated and released from the hospital. He was wounded in the hip. He is now with family at home recovering from his injury. The injured officer is a 14-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau assigned to North A shift.

There were two Portland Police officers assigned to the Special Emergency Reaction Team who fired shots. The involved officers will be identified tomorrow and will be interviewed within 48 hours of the incident. The officers are on paid administrative leave until the completion of the investigation.

The federal agency who was serving the warrant was the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Portland Police officers were not involved in the warrant service. They were called by the DEA to assist after the DEA started their operation. Portland Police Officers responded to that call for assistance.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Investigators are expected to be here throughout the day collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. Additional information will be released at the direction of investigators.

As part of the use of force review process, the Bureau will conduct an internal review of the entire incident, including the initial response, resources requested, tactics used, and post shooting actions. The case will go before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is composed of community members, Bureau members, and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.

A Portland Police officer has been shot and injured and an officer involved shooting took place.

On Friday, August 27, 2021 at 6:27 a.m., Portland Police North Precinct Officers responded to an apartment building the 1600 Block of North Willis Boulevard when a federal agency serving a warrant requested assistance. The officers learned that a suspect had been threatening to shoot the federal agents. The officers learned that the suspect was armed. The Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to assist.

Officers began evacuating nearby apartment units for safety of the community. At about 7:30a.m, at least one shot was fired and a Portland Police Officer was shot and injured. Preliminary information is the shot came through a wall. The officer was transported to an area hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Additional shots came from the suspects location. Sometime afterward a Portland Police officer fired shots and the suspect is deceased. There is no ongoing threat to the community.

North Interstate Avenue is closed between North Kilpatrick Street and North Argyle Street. Portland Police Bureau Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the incident.

Chief Chuck Lovell has responded to the hospital and has briefed Mayor Ted Wheeler on the situation. The PIO is on scene. We anticipate an additional update today in the noon hour.
