Fatal Crash on the City Border Last Week Becomes the City's 43rd of Year

A fatal crash on the border between Portland and Gresham has been determined to be within Portland's city limits and becomes the 43rd of the year.

On Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at 4:50p.m., Gresham Police (GPD) officers responded to Northeast 185th Avenue and Northeast Portal Way on a report of a crash involving an SUV and a moped. The rider of the Wuxi brand electric moped was wearing a helmet but it was not buckled. She was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

GPD investigated and determined that the moped rider was going southbound on Northeast 185th Avenue when it was struck by a 2004 Ford Excursion turning from southbound 185th Avenue onto Northeast Portal Way. The driver of the Ford stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

The moped rider died at the hospital on August 26, 2021. She is identified as Bonnie G. Culver, 38. Her family has been notified of her death.

After the conclusion of the on-scene investigation it became clear that because the crash happened in the southbound lanes it was within the jurisdiction of the Portland Police Bureau. The PPB Major Crash Team assumed the investigation. PPB is grateful to our partners at GPD for their work and will continue to work with them to conclude this investigation. No arrests have been made or citations issued at this time.

This was the 43rd traffic fatality for 2021 in the City of Portland. There has since been another (Thursday's fatal hit-and-run on Southeast McLoughlin Boulevard), bringing the total to 44 traffic related deaths this year.
