The Portland Police Bureau recently joined with other law enforcement partners locally and nationally in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)'s 2021 impaired driving national enforcement mobilization "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign. This high-visibility enforcement campaign from August 18 to September 6 is aimed at preventing impaired driving and improving safety for all road users. During this time period, PPB officers made 27 DUII arrests.

According to the NHTSA data, 10,142 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2019 that involved an alcohol-impaired driver. In 2019, an estimated 13 percent of fatal pedestrian crashes involved a drunk driver.

During this window and unrelated to the enforcement action, seven people were killed in traffic crashes. In total, to date, there have been 46 traffic fatalities in the City of Portland.
