The deceased driver is identified as Keith O. Poppert, 61, of Vancouver, Washington. His family has been notified of his death.

A fatal crash yesterday evening on I-5 has been linked to wet weather conditions.

On Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 7:51p.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of a crash on Interstate-5 northbound just north of the Fremont Bridge. When officers arrived, they learned that the adult male driver of a Ford F-150 pick-up truck was deceased. Another involved driver, an adult male driving a Kenworth semi-truck with trailer, remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Several witnesses also stayed to speak with police.

The northbound traffic lanes were closed and the Portland Police Major Crash Team responded to investigate. After speaking with witnesses, the traffic crash reconstructionist believes the driver of the Ford was driving north on I-405, merging onto I-5 north. His truck hit a pool of water measuring up to 4-inches deep. The truck swerved to the right, hit the outside jersey barrier, then slid toward the center lane of I-5 northbound. The pick-up was hit, broadside, by the Kenworth semi-truck, and briefly pushed north along the freeway. The Kenworth stopped as soon as he could, but the impact killed the driver of the Ford.

The identity of the deceased driver will be released after family notifications have been made.

The Kenworth’s driver showed no signs of impairment. There were no arrests or citations. The investigation has not been completed. If anyone has information about this incident, please reference case number 21-323356 and contact crimetips@portlandoregon.gov attention Traffic Investigations Unit or call 503 823-2103.

This is Portland's 58th traffic fatality of 2021 and the 3rd fatal crash in the past 7 days.
