**Although we were initially informed Mr. Rodriguez-Lopez was a Navy Veteran, we have since learned he served for 7 years in the United States Army, and is an Army Veteran.**
The driver who died as a result of this crash is identified as Salvador Manuel Rodriguez-Lopez, 34. Mr. Rodriguez-Lopez was a disabled Army Veteran who had just celebrated his birthday.
The driver of the vehicle driving the wrong way is identified as Amr Elzagh, 40. He is in custody and has been charged with:
● Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (DUII);
● Reckless Driving;
● Assault in the Second Degree;
● Criminally Negligent Homicide;
● Manslaughter in the First Degree; and
● Manslaughter in the Second Degree.

On January 2, 2022, at 11:21 p.m., officers from the Central Precinct responded to reports of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Interstate 405. As officers were responded, they were notified of a head-on crash on northbound I-5 involving two vehicles, just north of the South Macadam Avenue exit.
Officers arrived and found the driver of a vehicle headed northbound was deceased. The driver traveling in the wrong direction was transported to an area hospital. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.
The Portland Police Bureau Major Crash Team (MCT) was activated to investigate. Northbound I-5 is closed and traffic is being diverted at exit 299A, South Macadam Avenue, while the MCT investigates.
