This afternoon, Tuesday July 16, 2013, at 3:13 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to Southeast 136th Avenue and Holgate Boulevard on the report of a large dog attacking a small dog.

Officers arrived to find a large Pit Bull with a tiny dog in it's mouth. Several bystanders were hitting the Pit Bull and trying to get the dog to drop the smaller animal but were unsuccessful. Officers used pepper spray on the Pit Bull but it had no effect and the Pit Bull continued to shake the smaller dog in it's mouth. Fearing the the Pit Bull was about to kill the tiny dog, and that the Pit Bull was a danger to the bystanders trying to help, an officer shot the Pit Bull one time, killing it instantly.

The smaller dog was able to be rescued from the Pit Bull's mouth after it died and was taken to a veterinarian for treatment. It's condition is not known.

Multnomah County Animal Control is responding to take custody of the dead dog.
