Driver Attempting to Elude Police Crashes Into Parked Police Car, Rolls Over (Photo)

A driver is facing charges after trying to elude police, crashing into a police vehicle, and rolling his vehicle.

On Thursday, April 21, 2022 at 7:10p.m., North Precinct officers located a stolen vehicle, a black 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and initiated a traffic stop in the area of North Buffalo Street and North Interstate Avenue. The driver attempted to elude police, but quickly crashed into two vehicles, including a parked Portland Police unmarked vehicle at North Lombard Street (photo). Officers used spike strips to deflate the vehicle's tires, but the driver kept going until losing control and rolling the vehicle near North Interstate Avenue and North Interstate Place (photo). Three suspects fled the vehicle on foot but were quickly apprehended by responding officers. The suspects were transported to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. No police officers were injured.

The driver, Zachary S. Thomas, 32, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC) on charges of Attempt to Elude by Vehicle, Attempt to Elude on Foot, Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangering (2 counts), Fail to Perform the Duties of a Driver-injury (2 counts), and a warrant.

The passengers, Jonathan R. Crowley, 32, and Shaynne N. Purkapile, were booked into MCDC on warrants.

North Interstate Avenue was closed for about an hour during the investigation and clean-up.
