UPDATE: Subject Detained After Block Search in Powellhurst-Gilbert Neighborhood

On Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at 1:59 p.m., officers from the East Precinct responded to a shooting near the 100 block of Southeast 87th Avenue. When they arrived, they located one male who had been shot. The injured male was transported to the hospital by ambulance and is expected to survive.

The suspect, or suspects, left the scene in the victim’s car and were not immediately located. At 8:44 this evening, East Precinct officers found the victim’s car driving in the area of Southeast 104 and Southeast Powell Boulevard and attempted a traffic stop. The driver did not stop and led officers on a short pursuit before he crashed and ran off on foot. Numerous officers set up a large perimeter around the area. Due to the belief that a possible armed subject was in the neighborhood, the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) responded to the scene. The Air Support Unit, the K9 Unit, the Enhanced Community Safety Team, and a Focused Intervention Team officer also responded.

During the hours long search, SERT officers, with the help of the Air Support Unit located the suspect hiding in a neighborhood backyard. The suspect was cooperative and taken into custody. The suspect, 27 year-old Benjamin Clark was booked at the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Robbery in the Second Degree, Attempt to Elude, and Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle. Additional charges may be appropriate pending further investigation.

The investigation is ongoing and no further information is available for release at this time.

Tactical teams have responded to the Powellhurst-Gilbert Neighborhood to assist with a search for a suspect believed to be involved in an earlier shooting today in North Portland.

The Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) have responded to the area of Southeast 104th Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard to assist East Precinct officers. They're looking for a suspect believed to be involved in an earlier shooting.

Southeast 104th Avenue is closed both directions between Southeast Powell Boulevard and Southeast Holgate Boulevard. Southeast 108th is closed between Southeast Powell Boulevard and Southeast Holgate Boulevard. Community members within that perimeter are being asked to lock doors and windows and shelter in place during the search.

The PIO is on scene. Any responding media can stage at Southeast 104th and Southeast Powell Boulevard.
