Sexual Assault Suspect Found Dead After Apparent Suicide

September 10, 2013 20:00

On Monday September 9, 2013, members of the Portland Police Bureau's Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) served a search warrant at a residence in the 1400 block of Southeast 46th Avenue as part of an ongoing sexual assault investigation.

Upon entry into the home, SERT officers located the suspect deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The suspect, 35-year-old Joshua Luke Moffitt, was under investigation for multiple sexual assaults involving two victims who are now adults but were juveniles at the time of the incidents.

Sex Crimes Unit detectives have learned that Moffitt was a pediatric dentist and had been working for a non-profit organization doing dental work for children throughout Oregon.

Detectives have learned that Moffitt also lived and worked in the Browning, Montana area in the late 2000s and may have performed dental work on children at nearby Native American reservations.

Both victims in this case were known to Moffitt outside his work as a dentist, but detectives are concerned that there may be additional victims of abuse due to his exposure to children.

Although Moffitt is deceased, detectives from the Portland Police Bureau's Sex Crimes Unit would like to follow-up any information leading to additional victims.

Anyone with information about Joshua Moffitt or information about additional victims is asked to contact Detective Tracy Chamberlin at (503) 823-0400 or; or, Detective Hiedi Housley at (503) 823-0400 or
