Update: Victim Identified in Old Town Homicide (Photo)

Update:

The victim from the shooting on August 26, 2022 at 9:27 pm at NW 6th Avenue/NW Glisan Street has been identified as 70 year old Clarence Edward Smith. The Oregon State Medical Examiner determined the cause of Mr. Smith’s death was from a gunshot wound and the manner of his death a homicide. Detectives ask that anyone that has information about the case contact Detective Scott Broughton at (503) 823-3774 or at Scott.Broughton@police.portlandoregon.gov or Detective Michael Schmerber Michael.Schmerber@police.portlandoregon.gov. Please reference case number 22-230445. Mr. Smith’s family provided the attached photograph to include with the release.

On Friday, August 26, 2022, at 9:27 p.m., officers from the Central Precinct responded to a shooting call at the intersection of Northwest 6th Avenue and Northwest Flanders Street. Officers arrived to find an adult male who was shot. The man was transported to an area hospital where he later died.

The Portland Police Homicide Unit has responded to investigate. If anyone has information about this incident, please contact Detective Scott Broughton can be reached at (503) 823-3774 or at Scott.Broughton@police.portlandoregon.gov or Detective Michael Schmerber Michael.Schmerber@police.portlandoregon.gov. Please reference case number 22-230445.

During the investigation, Northwest 6th Avenue is closed from Northwest Flanders Street to Northwest Hoyt Street. Additionally, Northwest 5th Avenue is closed from Northwest Glisan Street to Northwest Broadway. The identity of the victim will be released after they are positively identified, the Medical Examiner has confirmed cause of death, and after family members have been notified.

The PIO is not responding to the scene. More information will be released when appropriate.
