UPDATE #3: Suspect Released from Hospital, Booked into Jail

The suspect in this case has been treated and released from the hospital. Jeremy J. Rieck, 45, was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Attempted Assault in the Second Degree, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and a parole detainer.

The on-scene investigation into the incident at Southwest 12th Avenue and Southeast Jefferson Street in Downtown Portland is wrapping up and streets are expected to reopen shortly.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at 6:07p.m, Central Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of suspicious circumstances in the area of Southwest 13th Avenue and Southwest Jefferson Street. A 911 caller reported a male chasing people with a knife. At 6:09p.m, the first officer arrived on scene. The officer located a man matching the description of the suspect in the area of Southwest 12th Avenue and Southwest Jefferson Street. During the ensuing encounter, the officer fired his weapon and the suspect was injured. Officers provided immediate medical aid to the suspect, including applying a tourniquet.

The investigation is still in its early stages and additional information cannot be released at this time. Updates will be released at the direction of investigators.

Investigators believe there were witnesses who may have information about the events that led up to this incident but who left the scene and have not yet talked to police. The involved officer was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

As part of the use of force review process, the Bureau will conduct an internal review of the entire incident, including the initial response, resources requested, tactics used, and post shooting actions. The case will go before the Police Review Board (PRB), which is composed of community members, Bureau members, and representatives from the Independent Police Review Division.

The suspect in this incident, an adult male, was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he is receiving treatment. His injuries are non-life threatening. He is currently being detained pending further investigation.

Detectives from the Portland Police Homicide Unit are on scene investigating per PPB policy. The on-scene investigation is likely to continue for several hours. Additional updates will be provided as appropriate.

An officer-involved shooting investigation is underway at Southwest 12th Avenue and Southwest Jefferson Street in Downtown Portland. No officers have been injured.

During the investigation, Southwest 12th Avenue is closed between Southwest Columbia Street and Southwest Madison Street. Southwest Jefferson Street is closed between Southwest 11th Avenue and Southwest 13th Avenue.
