At approximately 10:45 p.m., the man on the Vista Bridge came down and has been transported to a Portland hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The man on the ledge of the Vista Bridge remains on the bridge this evening after more than 5 hours of crisis negotiation by Portland Police officers.

Negotiators worked with mental health workers, spoke with the man's out-of-state family, and worked with Portland Fire & Rescue to come up with a safe plan to get the man off the bridge.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., the police response at the scene was reduced and traffic was reopened. The man has been given instructions on how to safely come off the bridge but at this time remains in one of the concrete benches, outside the protective fence but inside the railing. Officers are nearby and are periodically checking on the man who continues to refuse to come off the bridge.

Help is available for community members struggling from a mental health crisis and/or suicidal thoughts. Suicide is preventable.

The Police Bureau has produced a new suicide prevention video http://youtu.be/_1uz3cs-HdA
