On Tuesday March 4, 2014, at 9:36 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to the Unicorn Motel, located at 3040 Southeast 82nd Avenue, on the report of a 2-year-old male unconscious.

Officers arrived and noticed suspicious injuries on the child. One officer performed life-saving CPR until medical personnel arrived and continued life saving measures until the child arrived at a Portland hospital.

The child remains in the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

28-year-old Joshua Howard, formerly of Astoria, Oregon, was in the room and called 9-1-1. Howard is the boyfriend of the child's mother.

Based on the suspicious circumstances, detectives from the Family Services Division and the Homicide Detail were called to the scene to conduct an investigation.

Detectives arrested Howard for Assault in the First Degree and booked him into the Multnomah County Jail early Wednesday morning. Howard will be arraigned on Thursday in Multnomah County Court.

This is an ongoing investigation and no additional details can be released.
