Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of an early morning stabbing on Southwest Naito Parkway.

The PIO will conduct a media briefing at 12:00 p.m., at Southwest Naito Parkway and Ankeny Street for interested media.

The victim, 39-year-old Bryce Carlton Powers, remains in a Portland hospital in critical condition but is slowly improving.

Detectives have learned that Powers, who is homeless, was involved in an argument and altercation with several other suspected homeless men underneath the Burnside Bridge when he was stabbed. Powers walked away and ultimately collapsed in the roadway of Southwest Naito Parkway near Ankeny Street.

Detectives are working to identify the other men involved in the altercation Powers and it is believed that all parties know each other, including Powers.

Due to concerns about public safety, Central Precinct officers will not allow any overnight camping on the sidewalk underneath the Burnside Bridge. The Portland Police Bureau is working with social service agencies to recommend shelters or other alternatives for those needing a place to sleep.

This morning, Saturday March 8, 2014, at 3:58 a.m., Central Precinct officers responded to Southwest Naito Parkway underneath the Burnside Bridge on the report of a pedestrian hit by a car.

Officers arrived and located the victim, a male adult, lying in the roadway just South of the bridge near Southwest Ankeny Street. The victim had not been hit by a car but was suffering from a stab wound.

Medical personnel transported the victim to a Portland hospital where he is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

Naito Parkway is closed in both directions from Northwest Couch Street to Southwest Ankeny Street.

Homicide detectives and Criminalists from the Forensic Evidence Division are processing the crime scene and are in the early stages of an investigation.

There is no suspect information at this time and it is not known if the victim was one of the homeless people sleeping under the Burnside Bridge.
