UPDATE: MAX Stabbing Suspect Charged with Assault, Bias Crime, Robbery (Photo)

The suspect in the stabbing of two juveniles on a light rail train is being charged with assault, bias crime, and robbery.

Shortly after detaining the suspect, officers learned that the suspect had just robbed a convenience store at knifepoint in the 9100 block of Southeast Flavel Street. There were no injuries in the robbery.

Officers recovered a knife nearby (photo), which was taken as evidence.

The investigation revealed that the suspect caused physical injury to the victims because of his perception of the victims’ race. The suspect, Adrian A. Cummins, 25, was interviewed by Major Crimes Unit detectives and booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Bias Crime in the First Degree (2 Counts), and Robbery in the First Degree.

The Portland Police Bureau investigates all reports of bias-motivated crimes and encourages any member of our community who is the victim of such a crime to contact law enforcement. Under Oregon law, bias crimes are defined as any criminal act that targets a victim based on the suspect's perception of the victim's race, color, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity or national origin. Detectives work to determine whether or not bias elements are present during the reported crime that align with Oregon law as defined in the Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS):

Two 17-year-old victims were injured after being stabbed on a MAX train in the Lents Neighborhood.

On Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 5:46p.m., East Precinct officers responded to a report of a stabbing on the Tri-Met platform at 9598 Southeast Flavel Street. When they arrived, they located 2 stabbing victims, both juvenile males, 17 years old. Portland Fire and Rescue and AMR paramedics treated the victims. One was transported to the hospital by ambulance, the other declined medical transport and was treated at the scene. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Officers began a search for the suspect, who left the scene. Within 6 minutes of the call, officers located a man matching the description of the suspect at Southeast 92nd Avenue and Southeast Flavel Street and challenged him. The suspect began running and officers pursued on foot. They caught up with him in the 9300 block of Southeast Mt. Scott Boulevard and detained him.

Portland Police Major Crimes Unit detectives and criminalists with the Forensic Evidence Division responded to investigate. Preliminary investigation indicates that the assault began on a MAX train and then the victims and the suspect left the train at the Flavel Street light rail station. The involved train was later stopped at the Clackamas Town Center station.
