UPDATE: Driver Who Died in November 18 Crash on SE Powell Blvd Identified

The driver who died in a single-vehicle crash on Southeast Powell Boulevard on November 18 is identified as Malik E. Austin, 27, of Portland. His family has been notified of his death.

The investigation suggests that Austin was driving a 2011 Dodge Challenger when he struck a curb and a brick façade, causing the vehicle to roll over. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

There were a total of 75 traffic related fatalities in Portland in 2023. That is a higher figure than the Portland fatal crashes counted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA’s count excludes crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, medical events, and deaths that happen more than 30 days after a crash.

A rollover crash involving a single vehicle has closed Southeast Powell Boulevard.

On Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 2:38a.m., Central Precinct officers responded to a report of a crash on Southeast Powell Boulevard at Southeast 28th Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a vehicle rolled over. The driver was deceased at the scene.

The Portland Police Traffic Division Major Crash Team is responding to the scene to investigate the crash. During the investigation, Southeast Powell Boulevard is closed between Southeast 27th Avenue and Southeast 29th Avenue.

This is the 62nd fatal traffic-related crash in Portland this year. Portland fatal crashes counted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for this year is 59. NHTSA’s count excludes crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, and deaths that happen more than 30 days after a crash.
