A man who was injured in a crash on a freeway December 4, 2023 has died from his injuries. James G. Jackman, 39, of Salem, Oregon, died in the hospital on December 25, 2023. Traffic investigators were notified this week of his passing. Jackman’s family has been notified of his death.

The investigation revealed that Jackman was walking in the middle of the travel lane of the ramp from I-5 southbound to I-84 eastbound when the driver of a 2019 Hino box truck struck him. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. No charges or citations were issued.

There were a total of 75 traffic related fatalities in Portland in 2023. That is a higher figure than the Portland fatal crashes counted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA’s count excludes crashes involving suicide, private property, non-public roadways, non-motor vehicles, medical events, and deaths that happen more than 30 days after a crash.
