UPDATE: Damage Caused by Shooting Suspect Expected to Exceed $500,000 (Photo)

June 11, 2024 14:02

The investigation into the shooting of city-owned property is ongoing, but Portland Police Bureau personnel believe the suspect, Chase Grijalva, caused more than $500,000 in damage to more than a dozen traffic control cameras across the city.

In addition, PPB would like to correct the details surrounding Grijalva’s arrest. After driving recklessly through Southeast Portland, at times into oncoming traffic, Grijalva stopped his vehicle in a parking lot in the area of Southeast 148th Avenue and Southeast Division Street. Officers report that Grijalva exited the vehicle in a very non-compliant, agitated state and he kept reaching for his waistband. These were concerning actions considering several shootings had just occurred. Officers used physical force to take Grijalva into custody. This resulted in some injuries to Grijalva and one PPB officer.

Grijalva was lodged at the Multnomah County Detention Center on the following charges: Criminal Mischief in the First Degree (17 counts), Unlawful Use of a Weapon (17 counts), and Resisting Arrest.

The suspect was driving a black or charcoal colored 2008-2014 Subaru WRX sedan with no license plates. It has a hood scoop, low profile spoiler with red LED brake light strip, black wheels, and rain deflectors on the doors. He appears to be wearing a blue coat with hood, black pants, eyeglasses, and fires a handgun with tactical light.

Detectives are not only concerned about the significant damage caused, but also the extreme risk of firing a handgun in our neighborhoods. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far.

If anyone has information about this suspect or the vehicle involved, please e-mail crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov attn: Property Crimes Unit and reference case number 24-134019.
