The driver killed Friday afternoon in a crash on North Lombard Street near North Marine Drive has been identified as 25-year-old Brandon C. Cassel of Portland.

The driver critically injured in this crash died at a Portland hospital shortly after arriving for treatment.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the southbound driver (deceased) was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle, and crossed the center line before colliding with the tractor-trailer being driven northbound.

This is the 36th traffic fatality in the City of Portland in 2017.

Names of those involved will not be available for release until Monday.

On Friday October 13, 2017, at 1:41 p.m., North Precinct officers responded to the report of a traffic crash on North Lombard Street near Marine Drive.

Officers and medical personnel arrived learned that the crash involved two drivers - one in a tractor-trailer and the other in a passenger vehicle.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was suffering from traumatic injuries and was transported by ambulance to a Portland hospital for treatment to life-threatening injuries. The truck driver was not injured.

Preliminary information indicates that the driver of the tractor-trailer was traveling northbound on Lombard Street and collided with the driver of the passenger car who was traveling southbound on Lombard Street.

Due to the severity of the driver's injuries, the Traffic Division's Major Crash Team is responding to conduct an investigation.

North Lombard Street near Marine Drive will be closed in both directions for several hours until the crash investigation is complete.

Updates will be provided when they become available.

The Portland Police Bureau is committed to working with our partners in government and the community to create safer streets and work towards reducing, and eventually eliminating, traffic fatalities as part of Vision Zero.
