On Thursday, September 27, 2001, all command staff members of the Portland Police Bureau held a training exercise to assess the Portland Police Bureau’s readiness to respond to a chemical or biological act of terrorism. The Portland Fire Bureau and the Portland Police Bureau’s Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) facilitated the training. This training is part of the Portland Police Bureau’s ongoing commitment to improve emergency response procedures.

During the next phase of this training, Explosive Disposal Unit technicians are being assigned to divisions of the Portland Police Bureau. The technicians will meet with supervisors to orient them to the current Police Bureau procedures for dealing with a chemical or biological event. The technicians will then train all sworn and non-sworn employees of the Portland Police Bureau.

The proper response to chemical or biological agents may involve other bureaus within the City, as well as other agencies from the metropolitan area, the State, and Federal Government. A directive outlining the Portland Police Bureau’s actions will be published in the next few weeks.

A coordinated response to the needs of Portland’s citizens requires that Portland Police Bureau employees are prepared at both their home and workspace. Portland Police Bureau Chief Mark A. Kroeker has prepared a short video that Bureau members will watch in the coming week. This video will offer helpful suggestions to prepare Bureau members so that we are in turn prepared to serve the citizens of Portland.
