Two Men Die in Seperate Speed-Related Collisions

August 24, 2005 00:00

On Wednesday, August 24, 2005, investigators from the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division responded to two separate fatal collisions. The first occurred at 1:47 am, when 27-year-old Michael Chiles died after striking two parked cars in the area of Northeast 108th Avenue and Northeast Glisan Street. Prior to the collision, Chiles had been traveling Westbound on Northeast Glisan Street at a high rate of speed. Investigators believe Chiles may have fallen asleep and alcohol may be a contributing factor in the collision.

The second collision occurred at about 2:40 am, when a motorcycle, operated by 33-year-old Michael Haaseth failed to stop for the stop sign at Southeast Belmont Street while traveling Northbound on Southeast 54th Avenue at a high rate of speed. The motorcycle collided with a truck, operated by 28-year-old Jose Novelo Jr., who was traveling Westbound on Southeast Belmont Street. The force of the collision ruptured the gas tank of the motorcycle and caused a fire that was extinguished by Novelo, who was not injured in the collision. Investigators have not determined if alcohol was a factor in the collision.

Anyone with information on either collision is asked to call the Traffic Division at (503) 823-2208.

This investigation is continuing.
