“The events of this holiday weekend have made it clear that we need to have seamless communication with our regional and federal law enforcement partners – we need to rejoin the Joint Terrorism Task Force,” stated Commissioner Dan Saltzman.
The Portland Joint Terrorism Task Force was created in 1997, focused primarily on domestic terrorism. After the events of September 11, 2001, the Portland JTTF’s scope increased to include counteracting international terrorism. In 2005, the Portland City Council withdrew Portland Police officers from the JTTF. Commissioner Dan Saltzman was the only member of the City Council to vote against withdrawing from the JTTF.
Saltzman believes the Portland City Council should commit to rejoining the JTTF at its December 8th City Council meeting. “We need to move forward, we must not delay when the safety of our residents is at stake,” stated Commissioner Saltzman.
