I want to thank my Council Colleagues for coming together to unanimously pass the welcoming city, sanctuary city and inclusive city resolution.
This is an important stand that we are taking as a Council, and an even more important message that we are conveying to the community we serve, that you matter and that you are welcome here.
With all that is happening on the national stage, it is more important than ever that we reflect on who we are as a City, and what we want to be known for.
This resolution captures just that. Portland will be a welcoming, safe place for people of all walks of life, regardless of race, national origin, immigrant or refugee statuses.
It’s disheartening that we are living in times that make it necessary for us to reaffirm the values that should be important to all of us.
People across our City are living in fear and uncertainty that they won’t be able to keep their loved ones safe or their families together.
Today, we are making it clear: we have your back, and will do everything in our power to protect you as our neighbors.
Together, we will reject hate, discrimination, and divisiveness of any kind in our City, and will encourage our counterparts across the Country to do the same.
I am proud to live in a community willing and committed to taking this stand.
Thank you to all the staff & community partners who worked together to make this happen.
