Hopworks Urban Brewery is committed to sustainable building construction, healthy land use and management, mindful water use and re-use, organic and local ingredients for food and beverage production, healthy and fun work environment, excellent customer service, 100% smart energy and a zero-waste initiative.

Gold Certification

  • Certified B Corporation, as of March 2015.
  • Certified Salmon-Safe, as of August 2015.
  • City of Portland BEST Award winner, 2010 – BEST Practices for Sustainability: Medium Organization


  • Energy efficient light bulbs, timers and sensors
  • ENERGY STAR appliances including hand dryers in bathrooms
  • Purchase 100% renewable "Clean Wind" energy for the brewery through PGE
  • Greenhouse gas inventory completed and emissions 100% offset with ClearSky Climate Solutions

Water efficiency:

  • Low-flow toilets, faucets and dish-washing machinery
  • Catch and store 1,100 gallons of rainfall for dry season irrigation and outdoor cleaning
  • Use pervious pavers on 6,000 square foot parking lot
  • Roof run-off infiltrates to groundwater through a 5,000 gallon retention pond
  • Purchase Bonneville Environmental Foundation Water offsets for 100% of the water they consume
  • Recirculating hot water system saves water and energy by providing instant hot water in restrooms

Waste reduction:

  • Zero-waste initiative
  • Mandatory waste training program for all staff
  • Participate in Portland Composts! program
  • Work with local organizations such as St. Vincent de Paul Food Recovery Network, Organic Valley Coop and Dragonfly Chai to have usable food distributed and materials reused

Alternative transportation:

  • More than 2/3 of all commutes to work are by bicycle, walking, public transportation, or carpool
  • Sprinter delivery vans run on biodiesel which is supported in part by Hopworks’ used fryer grease
  • Participate in BTA's September Bike Commute Challenge

Purchasing practices:

  • Purchase brewery and restaurant supplies from local, organic companies
  • Support and work with like-minded businesses as much as possible

Promoting social equity:

  • Supply employees with livable wages and a 30% shared tip pool
  • Provide employee meal for each shift worked

Community service:

  • Donated $35,000 in 2009 to schools and organizations
  • Regular employee volunteer activities support Trillium Family Center, Polar Plunge, Friends of Trees, Growing Gardens, SOLV, Jackson Creek and others
  • Offer money and in-kind support to numerous organizations around the region
