logoThe U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the lead Federal agency dedicated to conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats in OR, WA, ID, HI and other Pacific islands. Working closely with Federal, State, local and Tribal agencies, the Service shares scientific data and collaborates on conservation strategies while managing habitats in support of over 400 threatened and endangered species on 270 million acres on 67 National Wildlife Refuges; 5 National Monuments; 11 field offices; 15 National Fish Hatcheries and the world’s only wildlife forensics laboratory.

  • Changing business practices to achieve carbon neutrality by the Year 2020.
  • Reducing carbon footprint by 5 percent annually.
  • LEED-Existing Building certification pending at Gold level for 911 Federal Building in Portland, in which the Service Regional Office is the major tenant.
  • New buildings in the field designed to optimize energy use.
  • As a Region, overall energy usage reduced 16% from 2010 to 2012, and diversion of waste due to recycling and composting efforts improved from 18% in 2008 to 82% in 2011 and 2012.
  • Employee-led initiative for an annual e-recycling event has grown to include other materials, from both office and home – the spring 2013 event resulted in 30 pallet loads.
  • Comprehensive energy plan developed for national wildlife refuges.
  • 3-year energy trend analysis compiled for each field station, separating building usage vs. resource management (“process”) usage.
  • Twenty-one video conferencing locations established throughout the Region.
  • Motion sensor-activated power strips being phased in across the Region.
  • Green purchasing training provided.
  • Regional Office acquired its first all-electric vehicle in 2011. One of the first Federal participants in Portland area in ECOtality’s Electric Vehicle Project.
  • Five Ethanol Fuel Blend vehicles acquired for field stations.
