Founded in 1906, Schnitzer Steel has become one of the nation’s largest recyclers of scrap metal. Schnitzer operates 95 recycling facilities, including seven deep water ports – on both U.S. coasts and in Hawaii and Puerto Rico – which enable efficient delivery of processed scrap metals to steel mills and foundries around the world. By recycling scrap metal, Schnitzer Steel diverts and reuses millions of tons of materials each year which might otherwise be destined for landfills.
- Almost 80% of our electricity consumption comes from renewable sources.
- As a result of our investment in a state-of-the-art water recycling system, we reuse 80% of the water at our steel manufacturing mill in Oregon.
- We are investing in environmental control and advanced processing technologies and reducing emissions from and increasing the fuel efficiency of our front-line equipment.
