Portland By Cycle logo

Portland By Cycle Rides offer a supportive setting for adults new to cycling or just getting back on the bike. We visit points of interest in a variety of Portland neighborhoods, via low-stress bikeways.  As you learn great routes around town, you may choose to use a bike more often - for fun, errands, shopping, or even commuting to work.

Meet at the time noted for sign-in and introductions; rides last about 2 hours.  Most are loop routes, returning to start point, except where noted.

Helmets are required, bringing water is recommended.  Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Holladay Park, NE Multnomah St and 11th Ave

Ride and learn about potential improvements for this proposed north-south route.          6.7 miles

 

The Art of Foster

Take a look at public art in the Foster neighborhood, soon to be more bike- and walk-friendly.     6 miles

Ride On the Wildside

Explore The Intertwine, the region’s system of parks, trails and natural areas on this series of free Saturday rides led by Mike Houck, veteran teacher and naturalist.

Cosponsored by the Urban Greenspaces Institute, Audubon Society of Portland,  The Intertwine Alliance, and Portland Bureau of Transportation.

  

Ride on the Wildside: Westmoreland Park to Leach Botanical Garden and Zenger Farm

Saturday, June 2, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Westmoreland Park, SE 22nd Ave and SE Rex St

This ride will start and end at the newly restored stream corridor and wetland at Westmoreland Park and ride the Springwater Corridor trail to Foster Floodplain Wetlands, Zenger Farm Wetlands, and Leach Botanical Garden.  A trip highlight will be learning about Leach Garden’s forest canopy walk and garden re-design with Leach Garden board and staff.  Bring your bicycle and helmet (mandatory), water and lunch, and binoculars.  15 miles.

 

Ride on the Wildside: Willamette Greenway Ramble

Saturday, June 16, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Salmon Street Springs, SW Naito Pkwy and Salmon St

Ride both sides of the Willamette River to explore gems along the Willamette River Greenway, including Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge.  This will be one of the last times you will ride on the Springwater on the Willamette this summer as the City of Portland will launch a major restoration project which will close the path for the summer.  Leader Mike Houck, who first became involved with efforts to protect Oaks Bottom forty-eight years ago, will regale participants with stories about the characters involved in those efforts. Bring your bicycle and helmet (mandatory), water and lunch, and binoculars.   12 miles.

 

 Ride on the Wildside: Overlook Park to Smith and Bybee Lakes

Saturday, June 30, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Overlook Park, N Overlook Boulevard and N Melrose Dr

This 16-mile loop will ride along the scenic Willamette Boulevard, along the North Peninsula Crossing Trail, Smith and Bybee Lake and back along the Columbia Slough.  Bring your bicycle and helmet (mandatory), water and lunch, and binoculars.  16 miles.

 

 Ride on the Wildside: Fanno Creek Greenway

Saturday, July 14, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Garden Home Community Center, 7475 SW Oleson Rd

This easy ride will start out on the old Red Electric rail right-of-way and travel along Beaverton’s Fanno Creek Greenway with stops at Creekside Marsh and restoration sites on Fanno Creek. Bring your bicycle and helmet (mandatory), water and lunch, and binoculars.  12 miles

Bike Maintenance Basics

Hassalo Plaza, NE Hassalo St between 7th and 9th Aves

Join us for a hands-on clinic covering basic bike maintenance, flat repair, and a few simple adjustments and cleaning techniques. Learn how to keep your bike running like a well-oiled machine! Great if you can bring your bike, as there’ll be an opportunity to work on it, but not absolutely necessary.

 

Shop By Bike / Build Your Own Bike Bucket*

Come discuss strategies for conveniently transporting groceries, packages, and kids by bicycle. We’ll conclude with you constructing your own “bike bucket”, a versatile plastic pannier.
