Better Naito Ahead!

#BetterNaito: A New Way to the Waterfront

Better Naito SignBetter Naito is a safer, more connected way for all Oregonians to get to and around during Portland’s busy and popular festival season. The project was first piloted in June 2015 during the two weeks of Rose Festival City Fair and returned for the Oregon Brewers Festival.

Every year, the festivals in Tom McCall Waterfront Park draw almost 700,000 people between April and November. This number rises by an additional 15,000 during peak festival season. Too often, festival visitors are forced into unsafe and inconvenient travel conditions. They must squeeze onto narrow dirt paths, walk in a bike lane, or bike in a travel lane with traffic speeding by right next to them. To increase safety and to make it easier for visitors to access Waterfront Park, PBOT and Better Block PDX partnered to create Better Naito. This innovative project was first piloted in June 2015 during the two weeks of the Rose Festival City Fair and returned for the Oregon Brewers Festival in July 2015. The result was a safer, more convenient and better connected space for people to travel to and from these events.

As a result of Better Naito 2015’s success, Better Block PDX and the Portland Bureau of Transportation are again partnering to bring Better Naito to Portlanders. This time, one northbound motor vehicle lane on SW Naito Parkway will be converted to open space for the public to walk and bike safely to this summer’s festivals and community events and will last from May 2 to July 31, 2016.

The festivals and community events participating in Better Naito 2016 include:

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

May 2 - 12, 2016

Better Block PDX

May 12 - 16, 2016

Portland Rose Festival City Fair

May 16 - June 16, 2016

Portland Pride

June 16 - 20, 2016

Waterfront Blues Festival

June 20 - July 8, 2016

BIKETOWN Portland Bike Share

July 8 - 25, 2016

Oregon Brewers Festival

July 25 - 31, 2016

These organizations have obtained Community Event permits from the Portland Bureau of Transportation to implement placemaking features along the Better Naito corridor and to create a physically separated space for people walking and biking in order to help everyone safely and comfortably access the waterfront.

The result is nearly a mile of street, 15 feet wide, open for two-way bicycling, walking and general public use from SW Main Street to NW Davis Street.

From July 1 through July 4, the street conversion will extend an additional quarter-mile south beginning at SW Clay Street and stretching to NW Davis Street for the Waterfront Blues Festival.

The public is encouraged to comment on this pilot project by email, Twitter and a phone voicemail box set up to receive comments.
