Safe Routes to School is seeking information from interested parties that would like to help update our traffic safety education offerings by developing and/or delivering programming for the 2019-2020 school year.

Our goals for this update are to:

  • Have lessons, activities, or campaigns for grades K-12;
  • Be responsive to the needs of individual schools and their communities;
  • Incorporate social safety in addition to physical safety of youth while in the right-of-way;
  • Reach every youth in the city with some level of traffic safety programming;
  • Partner with organizations who have experience empowering and working with underserved communities including but not limited to: communities of color, immigrant and refugee communities, low-income individuals and families, and lesbian, gay, bi, transgender people; and
  • To incorporate Vision Zero messaging where relevant.

This is an early scope to learn who is interested and what organizations may already be doing around traffic safety in Portland.

If interested, please fill out this short survey by JULY 20th, 2018. Our hope is to develop a request for proposal in the fall of 2018, and select partners by winter 2019 for work in the following school year.

For more information about our traffic safety education program please contact Lale at lale.santelices@portlandoregon.gov.

With the help of our partners at The Street Trust, Safe Routes to School provides pedestrian and bicycle safety instruction at 40 partner schools throughout the Portland area. Every year we hear from parents and teachers that their students' time spent with their safety educators made an incredible difference in their confidence and knowledge when out on the streets with other road users.
