Examples of transit priority projects and treatments in Portland

PBOT is already building transit priority improvements to improve transit travel time and reliability. This recent TriMet post highlights several projects built in the last couple years. The post includes people’s stories and comments about the value of making transit faster and more reliable. Much of this is conveyed through these videos.

The TriMet videos highlight transit priority projects built by PBOT in partnership with TriMet through:

·         PBOT Transit Spot Improvement Program

·         PBOT Central City in Motion

PBOT is integrating transit priority treatments into projects currently in the planning and project development phase. The most notable example is the Central City in Motion(CCIM) Implementation Plan and recommended bundle of projects. The CCIM Enhanced Transit projects are located where the greatest bottlenecks occur today resulting in the most severe transit delays impacting the greatest number of transit passengers. Many of these projects received regional Metro and TriMet funding assistance.

Three CCIM projects have been installed in 2019. They include transit priority lanes at three key Central City bridgehead bottlenecks to reduce transit passenger delay that benefits riders on 14 bus lines:

  1. SW Madison approaching the Hawthorne Bridge (constructed)
  2. NW Everett approaching the Steel Bridge (constructed)
  3. Burnside Bridge (constructed)
