The Joys of Autumn Riding

The golden leaves, balmy days and cool misty mornings have made for some lovely fall bike commuting. Yesterday I came back to the Portland Building and every single bike rack (about 50) in the covered outdoor lobby was full.

As usual, I was stunned by the beauty of our city and the Steel Bridge on my ride this morning. About 20 geese swam under the bridge as I got closer. What a great, healthy and free way to start the day!

The rain is supposed to arrive this weekend, but that doesn't mean that your riding season needs to end. A pair of rain paints and fenders make for a drier commuting experience, although my SmartTrips Downtown co-pilot argues for eschewing rain pants and packing a change of clothes.

Here are some tips for riding in the rain.

Biking with kids in the cold weather? BikePortland has some great tips from some super-cool moms.

I wanted to take a moment to comment. I walk across the Hawthorne Bridge every work day morning around 6:00 am and it never ceases to amaze me that there are one or more bicycle riders crossing without any lights, reflectors or light apparel.

As a pedestrian, I wear reflective armbands, tape on clothing, et cetera because I want to be seen.

As a driver, I have been taken aback when encountering a bicyclist or pedestrian cloaked in darkness.

Please bicycle safely.

Hi Betty,

Thanks for your comment. We'll post a story next week reminding folks about lights and wearing reflective gear.

It's great that you walk to work! I must say that walking is my favorite trip mode although for my commute I nearly always bike because of time. I need to take the time for a nice hour walk home or to work. I love experiencing the city that way.

Best,
