Summer is no time to be inside, bored and sedentary in front of the TV. Luckily for students this summer enrolled in SUN summer programs at Earl Boyles, Shaver, and Gilbert Park Elementary, summertime equals bike-time.

Safer Routes to School is partnering with these three SUN programs to bring active and fun bike safety programming to East Portland (all three schools are east of I-205). Our partner schools provide the students and Safer Routes provides the bicycles, helmets, and staff.

Our first program at Earl Boyles school just wrapped up and was a great success. A few of the eager participants are pictured at right. Students learned how to fit helmets, check bikes for safety, negotiate intersections, and use bike maps to plan safe routes.

Our group rode all over the neighborhood. Favorite destinations included Raymond Park, the Division Street Bike Gallery, Lents Park, and the Springwater Corridor Trail. The ice cream shop on the last day was also, unsurprisingly, a hit.
