Once streetcars traversed nearly all of Portland. Developers built streetcar lines in un-developed parts of Portland in order to increase land values and sell homes to a new commuter class.
Modern-day Portlanders can get some sense of what an early 20th century Portland streetcar ride was like on Sundays from through Christmas Day. Every Sunday from March through December, TriMet provides free rides on its historic trolley from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. within the transit mall.
