Portland Sunday Parkways announces 2011 schedule

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Portland Bureau of Transportation and presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente announced today details on the 2011 dates and neighborhoods for its popular Sunday Parkways events. This year, five Sundays Parkways will take place on the fourth Sunday of each month from May through September.

Sunday Parkways is a community event where thousands of people can be physically active on traffic-free streets connecting Portland area parks and schools. Walkers, runners, bicyclists, seniors, adults and children all enjoy performers, surprises, healthy physical activities and food. Sunday Parkways is organized by the Portland Bureau of Transportation with its many community partners, including Portland Parks & Recreation.

The following dates and locations are schedule for the 2011 season:

  • ·         May 22 – East Portland
  • ·         June 26 – North Portland
  • ·         July 24 – Northwest/Downtown Portland
  • ·         August 28 – Southeast Portland
  • ·         September 25 – Northeast Portland

“This year, we’re including more neighborhoods and making each Sunday Parkways longer in response to supportive feedback,” Mayor Sam Adams said. “The event has become a highlight of the summer for many Portlanders, and we’re looking forward to including more neighbors in the fun.”

"For years I've enjoyed the many health benefits of walking for exercise, so I'm excited and proud that Kaiser Permanente Northwest is once again a partner in the City's Sunday Parkways program," said Sue Hennessy, Vice President, Strategic Planning & Health Plan Services. "It's a true community event that celebrates and encourages Total Health. That's what our organization is all about, so it's a perfect fit."

Details on the exact route locations have yet to be determined. The first four events will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the fifth event will be from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about Sunday Parkways, go to www.PortlandSundayParkways.org or call 503-823-7599.
