Meet M. Susan Dean

"I volunteered because I love Sunday Parkways. They are an opportunity for risk-averse bicyclists to freely roam the 5 Portland neighborhoods showcased over the spring and summer. They are an opportunity for families to come out and ride together without fear. I feel so much glee and power when the Portland Police block major intersections and allow bicycle traffic to pass. Everyone on the route is smiling. Rain or shine people are having a good time.
Being a stationary volunteer (Intersection Superhero) allows the enjoyment of watching cyclists pass. The outrageous costumes, the families, the different bikes on show, the children, the many smiling faces are all a joy to watch pass by.
My favorite moment was watching knee-high children scooting along on their foot-powered cycles."
Word of advice from Susan: Bring munchies, water, a fold-up chair, an umbrella, and a friend...and your bike to ride the route either before your shift or after.
- Susan Dean, an East Portland resident, volunteered last year as an Intersection Superhero and Roving Medic at as many Sunday Parkways she could fit into her schedule.
