Pedestrian Safety Tips – What You Can Do

cover of Pedestrian Safety GuideHot off the presses! The Portland Bureau of Transportation has just published an updated Pedestrian Safety Guide – a guide to your rights and responsibilities for staying safe as a pedestrian.

The new guide has safety tips and information about when pedestrians are most vulnerable. Most of us know the basics – make yourself visible, eliminate distractions, be alert - but we don’t always adhere to these tips in our busy daily lives.

Even with the coming of spring and longer daylight hours, it’s important to keep in mind that the majority of pedestrian fatalities occur during the evening hours of 5 to 11pm.

Automobile drivers can also do their part by recognizing that all intersections, whether marked or not, are legal crosswalks, and by driving slowly and staying alert for pedestrians and other road users.
