June 26 Update:  Street work and street closures on NE 16th have been extended to July 8. 

(PORTLAND, Ore.) – The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that due to street repairs, NE 16th Avenue will be closed to through traffic between NE Sandy Boulevard and E Burnside Street on Monday, June 17, through Wednesday, June 26, all days and all hours.

The public is advised to use alternate routes when possible, expect delays, travel cautiously and observe all work zone signage. Local access will be provided to all residents.

Sidewalks on NE 16th Avenue will be kept open for pedestrians and bicyclists throughout the work period. The street is a neighborhood greenway commonly used by pedestrians and bicyclists. Signage at the scene will direct bicyclists to an alternate route on NE 17th Avenue, which some may find more comfortable during the work period.

There may be times when driveway access will be limited, and most on street parking will be unavailable on NE 16^th Avenue. Limited on street parking will be available on NE 17^th and 20^th Avenues. Parking on bothSandy Boulevard andBurnside Street may also be affected at times. The equipment used during this project may have some vibrations associated with its usage.

The closure is required because the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation will replace sections of failed road base under NE 16th Avenue. Sections of the existing asphalt surface will be removed with an asphalt mill. After the surface has been ground down, selected areas of the road base will be removed with an excavator and a new base layer of rock will be placed and compacted in the needed areas, and a new asphalt surface will be installed.

This work is weather-dependent, and the schedule may change.
