Request Bike Parking for My School

Bikes parked at Sacramento ElementaryGetting to school by bike is fun, healthy and a great way to start your day! A key component of getting students to ride their bikes is to have enough safe bike parking at the school.

We are here to help! The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program works with school districts to install standard city bike racks.

The process is simple:

  1. Contact your principal to get their support in putting in more bike parking.

  2. Have your principal email us with their support and a time they would be able to meet a SRTS staff person and our bike parking specialist.

  3. We will come out and meet with the principal to figure out the best location for the bike racks.

  4. Our staff will work with the school and school district transportation staff in order to get the bike racks installed.

We know it rains a lot here in Portland during the fall, winter and spring. But that doesn’t mean you can’t ride your bike to school. Covered bike parking is a great solution!

If you are interested in covered bike parking, please talk to your principal. SRTS can provide and install the bike racks, but the school must pay for the covered bike parking materials and installation. Some schools have been able to raise funds and find volunteers to do the installing.

If your principal is interested in covered bike parking, please have them contact us for more information, saferoutes@portlandoregon.gov, 503-823-5358.
